G.O. Edwards Park in Burswood is a beautiful, sprawling green space that has been steadily upgraded over the last few years, transforming it into a true all-rounder for Perth families. Tucked between Great Eastern Highway, Burswood Road and Craig Street, the park combines traditional play equipment, nature play, exercise stations, a fenced dog park and a picturesque lake, all shaded by mature trees. There’s a car park directly off Burswood Road, making it an easy spot to pull in with kids, scooters and the family dog.
The main Playground immediately grabs attention with its steep enclosed red slide built into a soft-fall mound. It’s fast, a little thrilling for adventurous kids and quickly becomes a favourite “again, again!” feature.
Nearby is a bird’s nest swing on a woodchip base, perfect for group swinging or little ones who want to lie back and gently sway.
A double swing set set over sand includes both a toddler bucket seat and a standard swing, and there’s extra play value in the sand digger and music-making pipes, which encourage digging, role play and noisy creative fun.
Nature play has been cleverly woven through the Playground. A large log climbing structure offers plenty of opportunities to scramble, balance and clamber, and there are timber steps, logs and stepping stones scattered around the area for kids to test their balance.
Paths between the equipment change surface from sand to softfall, woodchips and pebbles, giving the Playground a more organic, exploratory feel rather than a simple, flat play space.
In the middle of the equipment there’s a small patch of grass with benches, and more seating is tucked around the edges, so adults can easily find a spot to watch the kids.
Beyond the immediate Playground, G.O. Edwards Park really opens up. The wider parkland is spread over more than 10 hectares of high-quality turf and rehabilitated wetland, with many stately mature trees creating shady pockets to sit or play. There are picnic tables and barbecues, along with toilets, making it an easy choice for a casual family catch-up or birthday picnic. The park is fenced along Burswood Road, which provides some peace of mind, though families with “runners” should be aware there’s a lake within the park and the busy Great Eastern Highway sits just across a large grassed area.
Following the path towards the highway brings you to several exercise stops, including a large climbing-style fitness feature and other pieces of equipment dotted along the walking paths. They’re not all the same, which keeps things interesting for older kids, teens and adults who want to fit in a workout while the little ones play. The extensive paths and open grass make the park excellent for bikes, scooters and prams, and it’s a lovely spot for a relaxed walk.
Continuing along the path you’ll eventually arrive at the fenced dog exercise area. There are two separate enclosed spaces, each with some basic agility-style equipment. Shaded seating has been thoughtfully included for humans in both enclosures, which is appreciated on warmer days.
Kids who love dogs will likely enjoy helping pets try the agility obstacles, although some of the equipment may be better suited to medium and larger breeds.
On the way back towards the main Playground you’ll pass more nature play elements with rocks and logs to climb and balance on, as well as extra seating tucked under trees.
Near the lake there’s a dedicated viewing platform, a wooden deck with tall panels featuring viewing windows so children can safely peer out over the water and watch the fountain and birdlife. Waterbirds are a constant presence here, and it’s a peaceful spot for a quiet moment of birdwatching with kids.
The ornamental lake is also home to the Heritage Circle public artwork, which celebrates the Town of Victoria Park’s unique Indigenous and settlement history and adds a cultural layer to a family visit. Overlooking the water is a large gazebo that can be booked for weddings and special events, giving the park a lovely, almost formal centrepiece amid the natural setting.
With its mix of traditional and nature play, wide open lawns, shaded seating, exercise gear, cycling and walking paths, dog park, ornamental lake and public art, G.O. Edwards Park genuinely offers something for everyone in the family. It’s an easy park to spend a few hours in – kids can rotate between the Playground, bikes and nature play, while adults enjoy the trees and water views – and its central Burswood location makes it a handy green escape close to the city.
