Perth Cultural Centre and Yagan Square
The AWESOME Festival is back this September school holidays to inspire, awe and entertain the whole family. Packed full of word-class artists and performances, there’s something for everyone with a great range of affordable shows and free events.
Here’s a sneak peak of what’s on:
Head along to the State Theatre Centre for a jam-packed program of theatre fun with the sensational puppetry of Slapdash Galaxy, the stunning performances of the Boy and the Ball, and the gorgeous dance and music of The Thing That Matters – a show that has been lovingly crafted for bubs and their grown-ups.
The free ballet is back! So be sure to catch The Lost Little Llama and Little Red Riding Hood upstairs in the Heath Ledger Theatre. Paul Rowe takes kids behind the scenes in Theatre of Dreams. And the courtyard will come alive with the magical Bubble Canteen by Homunculus Theatre. Meanwhile downstairs in the Studio Underground foyer, check out our Artist in Residence Vanesha Chandran and her bright beautiful art. Don’t forget to drop into Chicho Gelato while you’re in the area for our special festival Llamapop inspired by The Lost Little Llama.
Head on over to PICA and immerse yourself in the colour and beauty of High VisAbility, an interactive exhibition created by Mandy White, Natalie Scholtz and the students at Sir David Brand School. Across at the WA Museum Boola Bardip, check out the AWESOME Schools Exhibition and make sure you grab some tickets to Aliwah Bardinar! (Look Out, Rosella!) Breaksea’s production with Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse. There will be Aliwah Bardinar! workshops in singing and visual arts that culminate in concert performances. While you’re there, check out the History Hunters workshop with author Mark Greenwood.
Continue the storytelling adventures over at the State Library of WA with Glenn Swift at the Story Hub and authors Tracey Dembo and Ebony Froome. Sensory Storytelling is also back with the wonderful people from Sensorium Theatre. You can take part in the storytelling creation with Sail Boat Home 내 집은 어디인가 and create your own stories in James Foley’s workshop Spontaneous Stories.
Over at Yagan Square the fun continues with Woody’s Bush Cabaret and ukelele jam sessions. The Lollipop Ladies will have you laughing all the way while Circus Yip Yip are on hand to teach you some fun new skills. There’s also cubby making and Tooth Fairy fun with author Briony Stewart.
As you wander around the various venues, check out the Kids Markets and support local young entrepreneurs, and don’t forget to head over to the Perth Concert Hall to check out WASO’s fabulous show Classic Adventures: Wild Animals.
It’s going to be another fabulous year celebrating all our beautiful state has to offer for children and bringing their imagination to life. We can’t wait to see you out and about at the AWESOME Festival.
