A playground has opened at Serpentine Dam, replacing an older, smaller play area. The fenced and gated spot, has been inspired by the surrounding natural landscape of the Perth Hills. Serpentine Dam has been a popular day trip spot for decades. Now, the area has even more to enjoy and explore.
The playground is suited to most ages, with low equipment that even tiny tots can explore. There’s a nest swing, small slide, merry go round net thingy (lol).
There’s so much climbing-based equipment.
There’s loads of nature based stepping logs and stones too.
As well as the new fun playground, the area’s $2.5 million upgrade (June 2024) includes picnic tables, benches, accessible toilet facilities and additional parking next to the Bistro By the Dam café.
After you’ve had a play, why not pop over for drinks or lunch at Bistro By the Dam, or even take a walk down the hill to the dam itself?
A pathway, with lots of steps, leads down from the back of the bistro to the dam near to the control tower. It’s excellent for the kids to see where our water comes from.
There’s also a spillway, where the water would flow to the Serpentine River, if the dam was to overflow. I can’t see this happening anytime soon, but it’s still cool for the kiddos to see the wide pathway carved through the rocks.
Serpentine Dam is one of nine dams in the Perth Hills that offer recreation facilities including walk trails, lookouts, playgrounds and picnic areas. It’s a great, free day out in nature – why not check out Churchman Brook Dam near Armadale, or Mundaring Weir?
Find Serpentine Dam and the playground at Kingsbury Drive, Serpentine.
