Lake Monger (now officially Galup Reserve) has long been a favourite spot for Perth families to walk, scoot and enjoy the open space, and the South West Playground adds a big dose of adventure especially for older kids.

Designed with children aged 5 and over in mind, this is a brilliant option if your bigger kids have outgrown the toddler Playgrounds elsewhere around the lake and are ready for more of a challenge.

As you arrive, the striking ninja-style rope obstacle course immediately grabs attention. My five-year-old couldnโt wait to jump on and declared it a real-life โRoblox obbyโ. The course is genuinely tricky in parts, with wobbly rope crossings, balancing elements and climbing features that really test coordination, grip strength and confidence. Itโs the kind of play that encourages kids to problem-solve and push themselves a little, and itโs very much a โhave a goโ space for adults too if youโre up for joining in.

Another huge hit is the 25-metre double flying fox, which sends kids racing side-by-side towards the lake. Having two lines means siblings and friends can zip together rather than waiting ages for a turn, and it adds a fun competitive element as they launch off at the same time.

The nearby embanked bump wave slide brings a big splash of colour to the otherwise nature-inspired Playground, with kids loving the sensation of bouncing over the bumps as they zoom down the hill.

Water play is a standout feature at this Playground. The dedicated water play space invites kids to get hands-on and a little soggy as they pump, dam and redirect water. Pack a towel or a change of clothes on warmer days so they can really make the most of it.

Away from the water, there are basket swings for group swinging, a roundabout for spinning, and a concrete slide that offers yet another way to whizz down the landscape.

The design of the Playground has a distinctly natural feel, using recycled timbers and thoughtful landscaping to connect with the cultural heritage of the area. Old Western Power poles have been cut on an angle to symbolise spears, paying tribute to the Indigenous heritage of Lake Monger / Galup. The surrounding turf mounds are shaped to represent a serpent encircling the Playground, a beautiful nod to the WAGYL Dreamtime story associated with the lake. These details add a strong sense of place and provide great conversation starters with kids about local Noongar culture and the history of Galup.
Parents will appreciate that the space has clearly been created with families and community in mind. Lake Monger already had two toddler-friendly Playgrounds, so dedicating this area to older children helps spread out the play and makes sure thereโs something for every age group. The layout and style of the equipment naturally draw adults in as well โ itโs not really the kind of Playground where you sit back on a bench scrolling your phone while the kids play. Instead, it invites you to balance on a beam, race on the flying fox or help your child navigate a tricky rope element. Itโs a great spot for shared play and connection.

Practical features include anchor points that have been installed for shade sails in summer, providing relief from the sun during the hotter months. The Playground isnโt fully fenced, although there is a 135-metre stretch of barrier fencing along Lake Monger Drive to offer some separation from the road. Families with very young children or kids who are prone to bolting will still need to keep a close eye on them, as thereโs also the lake itself on the other side.
Right alongside the Playground youโll find a basketball hoop and adult exercise equipment, making it easy for older kids and teens to shoot hoops while younger siblings play, or for parents to squeeze in a quick workout. The wider Galup Reserve offers plenty more to enjoy, with a popular 3.5km shared walking and cycling path circling the lake, open grassy areas and abundant birdlife. Itโs an ideal spot to bring bikes, scooters or the pram and extend your visit into a family walk or ride around the water.

There are toilets and other park amenities within the reserve and there is free parking nearby. Galup Reserve is open daily, typically from early morning until late evening, making it a flexible option for before-school energy bursts, after-school playdates or weekend family outings.
If youโre looking for a Playground that really challenges kids, celebrates local culture and sits in a beautiful lakeside setting, the Lake Monger South West Playground is well worth a visit. Bring the scooters, a ball, a towel and your walking shoes, and plan to stay a while.
