Tucked between Geraldton and Kalbarri, the little seaside town of Horrocks feels wonderfully oldโschool โ more classic fishing village than busy resort. With very little traffic and everything within walking or riding distance, itโs the sort of place where kids can safely roam on bikes while you wander between the jetty, the general store and the foreshore.
The sheltered bay is the real hero here. A fringing reef protects Horrocks Beach from much of the swell, creating calm, shallow water thatโs ideal for children to paddle, swim and snorkel. In the warmer months a pontoon is anchored in the bay and the long jetty becomes a favourite spot for confident swimmers to leap into the sparkling water or try their luck with a fishing line. Shade structures are dotted along the sand so you can comfortably settle in for a long beach day, and thereโs an accessibility ramp to make getting prams and wheelchairs onto the sand much easier.

Overlooking all of this is the Horrocks Foreshore Playground, a pirate shipโthemed play space raised slightly above the beach so it enjoys sweeping coastal views. Kids can scramble over climbing nets, zoom down straight and twisty slides, and swing high with the ocean as their backdrop. The pirate theme works beautifully in this setting โ it really does feel like the โshipโ has come to rest right on the sand โ and thereโs enough variety in the equipment to keep toddlers and older primary schoolers entertained between dips in the ocean.

The foreshore has been thoughtfully set up for families to linger. As well as the Playground, there are BBQs, picnic tables and toilets on the grassed area, plus a large, protected alfresco space that comes into its own when the famous afternoon sea breeze kicks in. Itโs an easy spot to cook up a casual dinner while the kids squeeze in โjust one moreโ play before sunset.

Convenience is a big part of the appeal here. Directly across the road youโll find the charming local general store โ handy for emergency milk, takeaway snacks and, of course, essential holiday ice creams. For longer stays, Horrocks offers a mix of private holiday rentals and familyโfriendly sites and chalets at Horrocks Beach Caravan Park, all within strolling distance of the foreshore.
Horrocks itself makes a lovely inclusion on a Coral Coast road trip or even a relaxed standโalone getaway. Itโs about 5ยฝ hoursโ drive north of Perth and roughly an hour north of Geraldton, or around 22 kilometres northwest of Northampton along the coast. With reefโsheltered swimming, a jetty and pontoon, a whaleโwatch lookout nearby in season, and the adventure Playground right by the sand, itโs a wonderful, lowโkey base for families who love the outdoors and a slower holiday pace.
