Francis Bird Playground in Cannington is a small, fully fenced, sand-based Playground that makes a handy stop for families, especially if you’re already visiting nearby Westfield Carousel. Tucked along Station Street, it offers a simple but appealing mix of imaginative play and climbing challenges that will suit toddlers through to primary school-aged children.
The Playground surface is entirely sand, which is great for soft landings and digging play. Shade is provided only by surrounding trees rather than shade sails, so it can get quite warm in the middle of the day and sunscreen is essential. The entire play area is fenced, making it particularly reassuring for parents of speedy toddlers or “runners” who like to explore. Outside the fenced zone there are a couple of benches, but families should be aware that seating is limited, and there are no dedicated picnic tables or BBQs.

The main play structure features a fun bumpy slide that can be reached in a few different ways, catering to a range of ages and confidence levels.

Younger or less adventurous kids can use the easy-to-climb ladder, while more capable climbers can tackle the rope bridge or rock climbing wall to get to the top.

Beneath the slide you’ll find a cute little shop/café style setup that’s perfect for pretend play. Kids can take turns serving “customers” or running their own café, and extra features like a driving wheel and telescope encourage imaginative games and role play.
Older children aren’t forgotten, with monkey bars and rope elements providing more of a challenge and a chance to practice upper body strength and coordination.

For younger children, there’s an easy-access rocking seat that doesn’t require much balance, along with both a baby swing and a standard swing so siblings of different ages can swing side by side. The combination of climbing, swinging and imaginative elements means most kids will find something that keeps them happily occupied, even though the Playground itself is relatively compact.

Facilities are basic, so it’s worth arriving prepared. There is street parking along Station Street and the Playground is within walking distance of Westfield Carousel, which is very handy if you want to combine a quick play with shopping or food options at the centre. On site you’ll find a water fountain and bins, but there are no toilets, BBQs or picnic tables at the Playground itself, so you’ll likely need to head to Carousel or elsewhere nearby for bathroom breaks and meals. Given the limited shade and seating, packing hats, sunscreen and snacks is strongly recommended.

Overall, Francis Bird Playground is a convenient neighbourhood Playground rather than a big destination park, but its fully fenced layout, sand base and variety of play elements make it a great choice for toddlers and primary-aged kids. If you’re in the Cannington area or visiting Westfield Carousel and need a safe, contained spot for the kids to burn off energy, it’s a very handy little Playground to have up your sleeve.
