Tuckfield Oval is a brilliant spot for families looking for a Playground with a view. Perched high above the Swan River and Fremantle’s busy port, this hillside park in East Fremantle combines big climbing challenges with natural play elements and wide‑open grass – plus you’re just a short stroll from the famous rainbow shipping containers and the George Street café strip.

The main drawcard is the huge rope climbing structure, which immediately appeals to confident climbers and school‑aged kids. It’s the kind of piece that invites them to scramble, hang, balance and test their limits, and the elevated position means they’re rewarded with sweeping river and port views once they reach the top.

Beside this is a large stripy hill, covered in soft fall with rock‑climbing style hand and footholds built into the slope. Children can choose their own route up, making it as easy or as tricky as they like.

Adults may even be tempted to clamber up too – the panorama from the top makes the effort worthwhile – but you do need to keep a close eye on younger or less sure‑footed kids on the steeper sections.

The design has a strong nature play feel. Much of the play equipment is timber, and the ground uses a mix of bark and soft fall. Older kids will enjoy the obstacle‑course style layout, where ropes, wooden posts and balance elements can be linked together into their own challenges. There’s also a small tyre swing for hanging out between adventures.

Lower down the slope you’ll find a separate wooden obstacle course that’s better suited to younger children. This area includes low logs and ropes to clamber over, a fireman’s pole and a small slide – enough variety to keep toddlers and preschoolers interested without being overwhelming.

Nearby, a dedicated nature play zone offers stepping and balancing logs and little pathways to follow, including a wobbly log that’s great for practising balance and bravery.

Away from the equipment, Tuckfield Oval has a generous grassed area with plenty of space to run, kick a ball or throw down a picnic rug. It’s an inviting spot for a game of chasey or to simply sit and soak up the river outlook while the kids play.

Facilities are fairly simple. There are drinking fountains on site, along with a couple of shaded picnic tables and a barbecue, making it easy to bring your own lunch or snacks. However, there are no toilet facilities at the oval, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re visiting with toilet‑training toddlers or for a birthday party. Shade is also limited, especially over the main play areas, so on hot, sunny days you’ll want hats, sunscreen and perhaps to time your visit for early morning or late afternoon.

Despite those drawbacks, Tuckfield Oval is a fantastic choice for families who love nature‑inspired play, big climbs and beautiful views. Combine a play here with a wander to see the rainbow shipping containers or a coffee stop on George Street, and you’ve got an easy, fun outing in East Fremantle.

Lovely playground, my young kids love climbing so this was perfect. I was thinking of a birthday park venue but unfortunately there are no toilets facilities
