MacDonald Park Padbury

MacDonald Park in Padbury is a fantastic all-rounder for families, combining an engaging scooter and bike skills track, a fun mix of nature and traditional play, and a huge sporting oval. Tucked away in a residential pocket, it offers plenty of space to run, ride and explore, making it a brilliant spot for everything from quick after-school visits to weekend playdates and sports sessions.

The standout feature is the traffic-themed scooter and bike track designed especially for younger riders. Kids can weave their way around roundabouts, speed humps and twisting roads, all lined with mini road signs, pedestrian crossings and designated parking areas for bikes and scooters.

It’s not only loads of fun, but also a great way for children to learn basic road rules in a safe environment.

Role-play is encouraged with a fuel station and an ice cream truck, where little ones can “fill up” and serve their friends between laps.

Next to the main circuit is a small dirt track, perfect for children who like the idea of going “off-road” and getting their wheels a bit dusty. Whether they’re on balance bikes, scooters or small bikes, there’s enough variety in the layout to keep toddlers and early primary-aged kids entertained for a good stretch of time. Don’t forget helmets – with so much riding space and a focus on road safety, it’s the ideal spot to reinforce good habits.

The nature play area offers a more challenging experience, especially for older or more confident kids. Timber balance beams, steppers and wobble elements invite children to climb, test their balance and create their own obstacle courses.

A lovely touch is the use of timbers reclaimed from the original Ocean Reef Boat Harbour finger jetties, giving the space a bit of local character and history.

Scattered limestone blocks feature carved insects and other small details for little explorers to find, which was a big hit with younger children.

For those who prefer more traditional Playground equipment, there’s a compact but well-thought-out play structure. It includes a small climbing frame with a slide, monkey bars, a telescope and steering wheel for imaginative play, along with a noughts-and-crosses panel.

A sand play table and sand wheel add to the sensory fun, so bringing a few sand toys is a good idea.

Nearby, you’ll find a swing set with a standard swing, a toddler seat and a hammock-style swing, giving options for both big kids and littlies.

The park opens out onto a large, well-maintained sporting oval that includes a cricket pitch, practice nets and footy goals. It’s ideal for kicking the footy, practising cricket, flying kites or simply having a big run around. Local sporting clubs use the oval, and toilets are located at the clubrooms on the opposite side of the oval; these are typically available when the facilities are in use, so it’s worth being prepared just in case they’re not open during a quiet weekday visit.

MacDonald Park is also one of the City of Joondalup parks equipped with free electric barbecues, making it convenient for family gatherings and weekend sausage sizzles. There is a sheltered picnic table as well as additional picnic benches dotted throughout the Playground, and beautiful mature trees offer natural shade over large parts of the play spaces. The surrounding streets provide plenty of parking along MacDonald Avenue, and the layout of the park means you can usually find a spot close to the action.

One important thing to note is that MacDonald Park is designated as a dog-prohibited area by the City of Joondalup, so dogs are not allowed anywhere within the park or on the oval. This helps keep the oval and play areas clean and comfortable for families and sporting clubs. 

Overall, MacDonald Park Padbury is an excellent family destination in Perth’s north, particularly for scooter- and bike-mad kids. With its clever mix of active play, nature elements, sports facilities and picnic amenities, it’s a spot you can easily spend a few hours at, and one that works just as well for everyday play as it does for special get-togethers.
