Book Week is one of the highlights of the school year — and, if we’re honest, one of the most common sources of last-minute panic in Perth households. This year the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) celebrates Book Week from 22–28 August 2026, with the lovely theme “Symphony of Stories.” It’s also a milestone year: the CBCA Book of the Year Awards turn 80. If you’d like the exact dates and theme details handy, there’s a simple Book Week 2026 dates and theme guide you can bookmark.

Whether your child has known exactly who they want to be since term one, or the note has only just appeared in the school bag, here are some practical, Perth-friendly costume ideas to take the stress out of dress-up day.

Start with the book, not the costume
The easiest way to land on a costume is to begin with a book your child already loves. A favourite story means an enthusiastic kid on parade morning — and it keeps the day true to what Book Week is actually about: reading. Ask which character they’d most like to be, then work backwards to the outfit. You’ll almost always find the answer is simpler (and cheaper) than a full themed kit.

Easy wins by age
Little ones (3–6): Keep it comfy and recognisable. Classic storybook animals are perennial winners — a plush lion suits all the brave-little-lion picture books, and small children love an animal costume with ears and a soft, easy fit they can actually move and play in.

Middle primary (7–10): This age group adores funny, modern book heroes. Graphic novels and comic-book characters are hugely popular right now, so a colourful superhero look is an instant hit — and it doubles as everyday play clothes long after the parade.

Upper primary (11+): Older kids often want something with a sense of adventure. A space explorer (astronaut) is a brilliant nod to the many space and science books kids this age love — and a suit plus a hood is an easy, instantly recognisable look that needs no extra props.

Last-minute and no-sew ideas
Busy week? You don’t need a sewing machine. Some of the best Book Week costumes come straight from the wardrobe plus one or two accessories:

  • Red jumper + a basket = Little Red Riding Hood
  • Blue dress + a white apron = Alice in Wonderland
  • Yellow raincoat + wellies = plenty of picture-book characters
  • Dressing gown + a teddy = a cosy bedtime-story character

If you’d rather grab something ready to go, you can browse a whole range of kid-sized, book-themed options in one place at Kids Book Week Costumes, an Australian-owned costume store with a dedicated Book Week range for kids.

Dress for a Perth August
Late August in Perth can swing from crisp mornings to mild afternoons, so think in layers. A long-sleeve top or leggings under a costume keeps little ones warm at the morning parade without ruining the look, and it’s easy to peel off if the day warms up. For sensory-sensitive children, comfort beats spectacle every time — a favourite character built around their own soft clothes, with just one “character” piece added, is often far happier than a full costume.

Make it last beyond the day
The most budget-friendly (and least wasteful) costumes are the ones that get worn again. Pieces like capes, animal ears, hats and plain dresses can be re-mixed into a different character next year, handed down to younger siblings, or simply added to the dress-up box at home. A class costume swap is a brilliant idea worth suggesting to your school’s P&C, too — it keeps perfectly good outfits in circulation and takes the pressure off families.

The takeaway
Book Week doesn’t need to be expensive or stressful. Start with a book your child loves, keep comfort front of mind for the Perth weather, and don’t be afraid to improvise with what’s already at home. Whatever your child wears on 22–28 August, the real win is a kid who’s excited about a story — and that’s something every Perth family can pull off.
