Bells Rapids Brigadoon is where the Avon and Swan rivers meet and it’s one of my favourite spots for a family picnic at any time of year.
If you visit during the wetter months you’ll find Bells rapids in full force and kids will love watching the many people Kayaking down the rapids and then attempting to get back to the top again.
The girls loved picking all the different wild flowers that are growing everywhere during the wetter months. Such an abundance of vivid colours!
In the drier Summer months the rapids disappear leaving behind swimming holes that are great for cooling off in. There is plenty of shade around from the many trees to provide shelter from the summer sun.
What ever time of year you visit the best treat is taking the journey along the bridge over the rapids to find two tree swings on the nearby tree. My girls loved them! There is something quite magical about a tree swing!
There are many great spots for a picnic although there are no picnic tables so I’d recommend taking a picnic blanket with you so you can pick a great spot along the banks of the river.
If you are feeling a bit energetic there a couple of walking trails available ranging in distance and difficulty. The River Walk is a 45 minute 2.5km walk and is flat most of the way with a small rocky section. Goat Walk is a 1 hour 15 minute 3km walk and requires medium level fitness due to steep inclines and loose gravel sections.
One downside to Bells Rapids Brigadoon is the pathway from the dirt car park down to the bridge is steep and uneven and not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. There is a toilet block situated in the car park area.
Bells Rapids can be reached via Cathedral Avenue.
