Yalbunullup Mountain Bike Trails in Yellagonga Regional Park are a brilliant new addition to Perthโs northern suburbs, offering an easy-to-access, family-friendly spot to get out on the bike. Tucked off Lakeside Drive on the northโwestern side of Lake Joondalup, this compact network makes the most of the natural bushland and lake views, creating a fun place to ride without needing to head for the hills.

The trail network offers around 7km of crossโcountry and flow trails designed for beginner and intermediate riders. Trails are clearly graded using the standard colour system โ green trails are easy and best suited to newer riders or kids, while blue trails step things up with more features and require some basic technical skills. There are 14 trails in total, so you can mix and match short loops or link a few together for a longer session, with options that suit a wide range of ages and fitness levels.

For those chasing a bit more excitement, Yalbunullup also includes two intermediate jump trails. These are a great progression for riders who are confidently tackling blue trails and want to work on airtime and skills without committing to a fullโblown downhill park.

The whole network has been designed with โaccessible funโ in mind, so while thereโs plenty to keep intermediate riders interested, it still feels welcoming and unintimidating for families and newer riders.

Although the tracks are primarily aimed at older kids, teens and adults, younger riders can still get in on the fun too. During quieter times, little ones on balance bikes or with training wheels can enjoy cruising the easier sections, practising their skills and soaking up the adventure in a more relaxed, low-pressure way.

One of the big drawcards here is the setting. Yellagonga Regional Park is a leafy oasis running through Perthโs northern suburbs, and the Yalbunullup network has been laid out to complement the surrounding bushland rather than dominate it. As you ride, youโll catch glimpses of Lake Joondalup and enjoy a backdrop of native vegetation, birdlife and open skies. Itโs easy to turn a ride into a halfโday adventure by exploring more of the park before or after you hit the trails.

Facilities are excellent, making this an easy meeting point for families and groups. At the top of the trail network youโll find a large pavilion-style shelter providing plenty of undercover space for resting between laps, plus toilets, water and parking nearby. This central hub works well as a base camp โ meet your friends, top up drink bottles, enjoy a snack in the shade and then roll straight back onto the trails.

Yalbunullup also has a strong cultural story. The name was chosen in consultation with Traditional Owners and reflects the traditional Noongar name for the site. Yellagonga Regional Park itself acknowledges Yellagonga, the Aboriginal leader of the Mooro people. This area was traditionally used for shelter and food during seasonal movements and remains a place of deep cultural significance, forming part of Aboriginal Dreaming. Interpretive signage around the trailhead helps visitors connect more deeply with the history and meaning of the landscape theyโre riding through.

With its mix of green and blue trails, jump lines, quality facilities, beautiful lakeside setting and easy access to nearby Neil Hawkins Park, Yalbunullup Mountain Bike Trails are set to become a favourite for local riders and families. Whether youโre introducing kids to mountain biking, sneaking in a quick afterโwork ride, or looking for a relaxed weekend spin with friends, this new network offers an easy, enjoyable and culturally rich way to get outside and active.
