All aboard the good ship “Investigator”! We found ourselves at the Flinders Bay Playground in Augusta, quite by accident, literally. What started as a family day out at Hamelin Bay, ended at the small seaside town after a trip to the Augusta Hospital (gotta love a fishhook in the leg!). Anyway, our next trip to Augusta is already planned, after this great little find. The “ship playground” is found at a brilliant park right on the ocean.
The nature-based playground itself is a pearler, with a beautiful Jarrah ship (which could be a pirate ship or “friendly” ship in imaginative play) taking pride of place.
Here, there’s play equipment that suits every age. Toddlers can tackle the low-level stepping logs, while older kids test themselves on the more challenging climbing and balancing ropes. Plus there’s a slide, fireman’s pole, and of course a ship’s wheel for the Captain of the boat.
There’s a couple of swings too, for kids of all ages.
The facilities here include toilets, change rooms, shaded seating for parents and BBQ facilities.
During peak times, like summer holidays, you may also find an ice cream truck here.
For me, it’s the location that makes this playground extra special. Found right on Flinders Bay, you’ve got front-row seats to some of the most spectacular sea views in the whole Southwest region. The crystal-clear waters of Granny’s Pool are perfect for a paddle during the warmer months. I recon that Southern Ocean always seems colder, than the Indian Ocean!
Why not bring a picnic to enjoy under the pine trees, or like us, grab take away pies and more from the excellent Augusta Bakery (just a 2 minute drive up the road).
You can easily spend a few hours here, especially if it’s swimming weather. Be sure to explore a little further – Augusta is worth the drive.
