Tucked away in the northern suburbs, Trethowan Park is one of those hidden gems you might drive past without even knowing it’s there—especially since it stretches over multiple blocks and has no obvious signage! But once you discover it (starting at Trethowan Promenade in Alkimos, just 33 minutes north of Perth), you’ll be glad you made the stop.
The park begins with a spacious grassy zone and leads into a fully enclosed playground—a big win for parents with speedy toddlers. Inside the sandy play area, kids can enjoy a basket swing, digger machine, a seesaw, and a climbing structure made of ropes and metal bars for adventurous climbers. There’s even a sensory sand wall complete with a spade, perfect for hands-on, creative play.
One of our favourite features? The shaded picnic area located directly across from the playground, still within the secure fenced area—making it a fantastic spot for an outdoor birthday party or sunny-day gathering. Just don’t forget your sunscreen and hats, especially with all that reflective sand!
While there are no bathrooms and limited street parking, you can usually find a spot somewhere along the long stretch of the park. And for a coffee fix or toilet break, Alkimos Café & Grill is just a few minutes away.
Once you’ve finished at the main playground, you can wander further down the park’s grassy walkway, which winds through open space and eventually ends with a few peaceful benches—great for a slower-paced stroll or resting in the breeze.
Trethowan Park may be tricky to find at first, but once you know where it is, your little ones can roam and play freely!
Tip: Take along a their bicycle to ride down to the end of the park.
