Why not be Sun Smart? Perth can have some extreme temperatures, and experiences high UV rating regularly. In addition to sun hats and sunscreen, shaded parks protect delicate childhood skin on hot or high UV days. Parks with natural shade or shade sails are perfect for keeping children safer in these conditions.

Sienna Wood’s Explorer Park is a multi-use space suitable for all ages, interests and abilities. The main feature of the playground is the ‘Tree of Life’, which is an 8m high climbing structure with tunnel slides. The climb to the first slide is just stairs, making it easy for little explorers to navigate. Reaching the bigger slide involves climbing ropes so it a little trickier for younger children. The popular Mills Park facility has recently opened a new all-abilities playground near the bbqs and grassed area. This new edition to the existing Mills Park Playspace and Skate Plaza is fully fenced and double gated which is also great for younger children. A good amount of the enclosed playground area is covered by shade sails and there are also a few seating options for parents too. Frye Park or Pirate Park in Kelmscott is a great park which features a large pirate ship but also has a fenced toddler playground and picnic tables in the same area. The toddler area and picnic tables are covered with shade sails in summer. The pirate ship has plenty to do with three slides, climbing challenges and treasure hunts. Lawler Park is a green, leafy park in Floreat with a playground suitable for toddlers and upwards. There are lots of play opportunities here to keep the kids busy. The larger playground structure includes two slides of different sizes, ring-shaped monkey bars, swinging platforms to climb across, some climbing ropes, and a tricky balancing beam with vertical bars to up the difficulty level. While we were all locked out of playgrounds due to COVID-19, Floreat Beach Playspace had a total makeover! The focal point of the playground is the ‘Kraken’, a cephalopod-like sea monster which I think looks a little like a blue-ringed octopus! The wooden climbing structure features climbing obstacles and slide. You can also hide in the belly of the beast. Hardcastle Park, Landsdale Located in family-friendly Landsdale, Hardcastle Park is a delightful new playground for kids of all ages. Featuring nature play, tradition play equipment and a picnic space, it’s a great space to hang out with the family. On arriving, I was first struck by the large grassed area. Situated close by to Subiaco Train Station and Domain Stadium is the pretty and peaceful Market Square Park. We discovered the park after a visit to a nearby cafe, and Miss almost 3 loved it! It was quiet and leafy, full of birdsong with the sound of the occasional train going by. Germano Park is a peaceful, leafy park with a playground to suit most kids located in Wanneroo. If your kids love to climb, they’ll love this park. Just a short 5 minute walk from Ngarkal Beach and the Port Coogee water park in the new Parkside Retreat estate, you will find this lovely local playground. The slide is attached to an up-ended sea container that has 2 ways of climbing to the top. You can go around to the back and climb the outside to the door. The Charles Riley Reserve is tucked away in North Beach alongside the local Community Centre and sports fields. There are rolling manicured lawns and landscaped gardens surrounding a small war memorial, and behind this, you will find a fun new playground that is sand-based with additional purple soft fall surfaces. Calleya Playground is an awesome playground located in Stocklands Calleya Estate in Banjup. There are 2 slides, including a very high twisty one for the brave and a smaller hill slide. A highlight of Calleya Playground is the 2 in-ground trampolines, they are very popular with kids of all ages and not something that you normally come across in a playground. It has 2 sets of swings. Just around the corner from the Alexander Heights IGA, is Lemongrass Park, a lovely shaded playground with traditional equipment and some nature play elements. One of the main features that caught our eye was the rope equipment. The curved slide has a rope web to climb up instead of stairs, and there are various rope webs or swinging ropes with a balancing rope below to cross. Miss 3 enjoyed having a go on all of these. Augustus Park located in Jane Brook is situated overlooking a beautiful lake. The main play area is mainly made up of ropes which is something different to the usual playground. Faulkner Park is better known as Volcano Park due to the large volcano that is the feature of the park. It is quite a large park with a separate area suited to young ones and toddlers, making it a great day out for the whole family. There is water play, sand play, flying fox and plenty of playground equipment including swings and slides. It is fully fenced and has two entrances which are gated with self-locking gates. Hawaiian’s Mezz Playground, Mount Hawthorn Recently Hawaiian’s Mezz in Mount Hawthorn upgraded their children’s playground to a new nature play style setup. This new playground engages children from toddlers to tweens, and is a great place to stop off whilst getting your shopping done. The main part of the playground is a new wooden play structure. At our weekly shop on Saturday we were very excited to see that Floreat Forum shopping centre has just opened a new playground in the outdoor area by the cafes/restaurants. Previously there had just been a couple of small things for toddlers to play on but now there is a proper playground complete with shade sails. South Beach playground in South Fremantle is perfect for pirate lovers! It’s a boat themed playground complete with a large climbing area, a double slide and a set of swings. Today we discovered the newly opened pirate playground in Ellenbrook. It’s located on Verbana Drive near Cashman Avenue. It is fully fenced (although there are a few areas where little ones could escape in the space under the fencing), shaded and there is soft fall and well as sand within in the park. My 3 year old was in pirate heaven as the main part of the playground is shaped as a pirate ship with a steering wheel, pretend canons and a lookout. On a recent road trip, we took a detour through Northam, the detour was originally to check out the Northam Suspension Bridge, which is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Australia. After crossing the bridge, which was well worth the visit (until the kids thought it was fun to make it sway), we discovered Bernard Park which features two fully fenced play areas, a water playground, sculptures, amphitheatre, picnic and BBQ facilities and public toilets. Gingin is a small and quaint township with a mighty new playground that is jam-packed with features and caters for children of all ages! The playground is nature-based, one of the main features is the Gingin Tower which includes two slides, a rope ladder and bridge. Other nature-based elements include stepping stumps and logs. Langley Park Playground is an ideal playground if you’re visiting the city on a family day trip as it’s conveniently located in East Perth. The playground is suitable for kids age 3yrs plus (despite the sign saying 4yrs) and there are toilets directly next to the park. The park is covered with shade sails and is partially fenced. Set on the sheltered beach at the vibrant Hillarys Boat Harbour is this lovely playground. With a nautical theme including its very own rocking boat, there are steps and ladders, bridges and even a double slide to race down. Garvey Park is a great local park just at the end of Fauntleroy Avenue on the river’s edge in Ascot. The kids love the playground as it has something to suit both my sensible 5 year old and my adventurous almost 3 year old!
