Why do we love playgrounds near cafes?
Kids love going wild in at a park. But sometimes parenting is hard or tiring, what with sleepless nights, teething and everything else. Sometimes parents and carers need to exercise self-care. Stopping at a family-friendly coffee shop or restaurant while taking the kids out to a playground can help. Adults can grab a much-needed coffee or bite to eat. Likewise, kids can enjoy a toy corner and very soon cut loose in the park. Everyone wins!

Bayswater Riverside Gardens located along Milne and King William Streets is a fabulous playground to visit with toddlers. Bayswater Riverside Gardens has great age-appropriate play equipment, fully fenced and gated, features rubber soft fall and is covered with shade sails. Jackadder Lake Reserve is a lovely family park ideal for a morning or afternoon of fun play and scooting/cycling around the beautiful lake and spotting the wildlife. The playground is suitable for kids of all age and is set in a mixture of sand and soft play flooring. Kids can enjoy wiggly slides, straight slides, and curly slides all of which aren’t particularly steep so great for the toddlers. In the middle of Victoria Park along busy Albany Hwy you will find Read Park. It is a lovely green, shady park situated next to the Victoria Park Community garden. The play equipment has been situated away from the highway and one of the play areas is enclosed with a fence. The area also has toilets, including an accessible toilet, drink fountain, rubbish bins and bench seats. Robert Thompson Reserve is a large grassy park located opposite the Noranda Village Shopping Centre. In the centre of this lovely park is a playground with equipment to suit most children. The ground surrounding the play equipment is a mix of sand and rubbery soft-fall. There are shade sails up in the warmer months, and there are a few small trees shading parts of the playground. Located on the beautiful South Perth foreshore is Hurlingham Rd Park a playground designed for able bodied and less able bodied children. The main play structure can be accessed by a wheelchair ramp. Situated in the Shorehaven Estate is Shorehaven Boulevard Playground – a lovely, partially fenced playground that is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Shorehaven Boulevard Playground features some play equipment we hadn’t come across before, and Miss 3 had a great time exploring. In the sand area, we found lots of colourful wood and plastic based play equipment. The lowest parts are made up of interconnected stations and feature some sensory play. Deep Water Point reserve in Mount Pleasant is a very popular spot for swimming, boating, water sports, picnics and birthday parties. Over the past year, this widely popular spot has undergone some extensive changes and the final stage is now complete and reopened in the last week. Barwon Park Craigiesituated in the family-friendly suburb of Craigie, Barwon Park Craigie has a great mixture of play equipment and green space to keep most active kids busy. On our visit, my Miss 3 immediately headed to the wood chip area first. This is a good spot for toddlers and kids who like imaginative play. It features a tunnel to crawl through, noughts and crosses, an abacus, and a playhouse with seating. At one time, the Donnybrook Apple Fun Park was the largest free entry playground in Australia. This beloved playground has now reopened (October 2021) with a thoughtful and fun transformation! We were lucky enough to get a look the day before it opened to the public. And it gets a massive tick of approval from us. Frederick Stubbs Park is a small park right on the coast in Quinns Rocks. It offers a small grassed area and a playground set on sand. The playground has a limestone retaining wall/steps, which along with the hill, would slow down any dashes towards the road which is nearby. We discovered this great little park just around the corner from Little Banksia Cafe in Kensington. It has a lot of features including a nature play area and playground. The main play area is covered with shade sails and the nature play area is shaded naturally. The afternoon we went was warm so the natural shade and trees around the park were lovely. While we were all locked out of playgrounds due to COVID-19, Floreat Beach Playspace had a total makeover! The focal point of the playground is the ‘Kraken’, a cephalopod-like sea monster which I think looks a little like a blue-ringed octopus! The wooden climbing structure features climbing obstacles and slide. You can also hide in the belly of the beast. Set right in the middle of the new, vibrant dining and entertainment precinct at Westfield Whitford City is a beautifully unique play area for children. Overlooked by many of the restaurants and sheltered underneath shade sails, the play area is unlike any I’ve ever seen before. Ivy Watson Playground in Kings Park is a great playground built specifically for 6 year olds and under. The area is fenced but it is large with several different play areas and can get very busy so you’ll need to keep an eye on your little ones. Stirling Square is a beautiful park in the heart of Guildford, Surrey. Surrounded by classic buildings, this park has much to offer. Fancote Park is located behind Stargate Shops in Kelmscott. As we drove past the big forte caught our eye so we stopped for a look and a play. The park has wide open grassed spaces for ball games or running around, sand-based playground, exercise equipment and the forte. The park is also equipped with a covered BBQ, picnic tables and benches around the play equipment. There is a drinking fountain near the picnic tables. I’ve recently rediscovered Woodbridge Riverside Park and I think it’s great! It’s located on the river in Woodbridge, near Guildford. This is a fully fenced park with safety latch gates at the main entrance. Although it’s not that close to us I’ve found it worth the drive as Miss 3 and friends have loved it each time we’ve been. There are so many play areas to explore, sand, nature and water play, slides, flying fox, tunnels, swings and a large expanse of green grass. The Swanbourne Beach Foreshore Playground is set in between the beach and The Shorehouse Restaurant. This is a fantastic spot to grab a picnic or BBQ and let the kids run around the grassed area and play in the small pirate themed fenced playground. There is a small car park in front of the playground with much more parking further round towards the surf club. Coode St Jetty playground is on the South Perth foreshore. The newly redeveloped East Fremantle Oval area has been transformed into a fantastic family-friendly space, featuring a nature playground located in front of the Carnaby Cafe. The Village West Playground at Whiteman Park has undergone a complete reconstruction with all new play equipment and shade sails. It’s a perfect park for summer days with almost the entire park covered by shade. It is still fully fenced with only one open entrance near the picnic tables. If you’ve ducked into Woolies at the Banksia Grove Shopping Centre recently, you’ll have probably noticed a new play area near the entrance. The bright and colourful play space has something to amuse most kids. The first thing we noticed was the slide. The ladder for this is built inside what looks like colourful metal crates. Hobart Street Playground is situated on the corner of Hobart and Auckland Streets in North Perth. Being a small neighbourhood park it doesn’t have fancy play equipment, BBQs, picnic tables or toilets. What makes it popular with many families is that it is fully fenced and gated, has large shade sails over all the play equipment and had a large grassed area perfect for throwing down a picnic blanket or playing ball games. After over four years in the making, the 9 million dollar redevelopment of Shirley Strickland Reserve is complete! The dog-friendly sporting reserve is now home to a state-of-the-art Sport and Community Pavilion, a fantastic nature playground, fitness equipment and cycle/walking paths. The main feature of the playground is the enormous wooden multilevel climbing structure with a bright lime green slide. As of autumn 2022, Coventry Village in Morley now has a fenced outdoor playground. In addition to the existing indoor playground, this is located close to cafes and restaurants. If your kids love to climb, then they are sure to love this! The play area is made up predominantly of climbing structures. The base is rubber softfall, so perfect for those of us who dislike sand. Jackadder Lake Playground is a picturesque park just north west of the city. This lovely lakeside spot features a shaded children’s playground, exercise equipment and paths perfect for bikes and scooters. As of the beginning of August 2023, the playground has been refreshed with new climbing equipment, a new and improved juniors area, and new picnic facilities.
