Why do we love playgrounds near cafes?
Kids love going wild in at a park. But sometimes parenting is hard or tiring, what with sleepless nights, teething and everything else. Sometimes parents and carers need to exercise self-care. Stopping at a family-friendly coffee shop or restaurant while taking the kids out to a playground can help. Adults can grab a much-needed coffee or bite to eat. Likewise, kids can enjoy a toy corner and very soon cut loose in the park. Everyone wins!
For this reasons, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee on the way. Don’t forget your reusable coffee mug!

Located at Pinneroo Point is a playground suitable for younger children. The sand-based playground features a climbing frame with two slides, a rope ladder and monkey bars. John MacMillan Park next to the library in Victoria Park has just reopened with a brand new nature playground, basketball courts, open grass and more. The new equipment has been designed around the lovely trees giving it a nice combination of natural shade and shade sails. There are toilets conveniently located behind the basketball area. Point Fraser Foreshore Reserve is a must visit if you’re heading into the city for the day with older kids. The equipment in this park is more suited towards school-aged children due to the equipment and steep hills around the landscape of the park. We made our journey to the Point Fraser Reserve directly from the city, it’s very easy to find if you just follow the river edge. The brand new Myella Estate nestled on the northern banks of Lake Joondalup is home to a super fun playground worthy of exploring! The bright orange play structure definitely sounds out in this nature-based playground. The structure is suitable for confident climbers who can navigate climbing nets and ladders to reach the slide. Occupying a beautiful spot along the banks of the Swan River, Bardon Park in Maylands is a great spot to play! There are two playgrounds located at Bardon Park. The first, closest to the car park, is relatively new and contains some unique play equipment and a focus on nature play. You’ll find a birds nest swing. A net bridge A couple of balancing beams. A few years ago I wrote the original blog on Pioneer Avon Park, which is located on banks of Avon River in York, fast forward to 2020 the park is unrecognisable! The playground is nature-based and features recycled timber seating throughout, sheltered picnic tables, BBQs, toilets and plenty of shade! South Beach playground in South Fremantle is perfect for pirate lovers! It’s a boat themed playground complete with a large climbing area, a double slide and a set of swings. The main feature of the playground is a 3 storey climbing tower featuring climbing nets, look out points, a slide and rope bridges. Tucked behind the Mundaring Village shopping centre is Lion Pioneer Park, a large grassed area with a playground, park benches and a covered picnic table. It can be found off the Stoneville Road entrance or via ramp or stairs from the shopping centre near the Post Office. The play equipment and grass is shaded naturally by the large trees around the area. We visited late afternoon and it was well shaded. Lake Monger is now home to an exciting new adventure playground! The playground has been specifically designed for children over the age of 5 who love a challenge! Arriving at the playground, my 5 year old couldn’t wait to tackle the ninja rope obstacle course, or as he called it the Roblox obby. Lathlain Park is found to the north of Mineral Resources Park – aka the home of the mighty West Coast Eagles! It’s a lovely little spot, across the road from the small but mighty Lathlain cafe strip, and larger playgrounds at both Rayment Park and Tom Wright Park. Bert Wright Park is a small nature playground located behind the library and community centre in Bayswater. For a small area, there is plenty to offer, the park has a nature play area, Basketball hoop, expanse of grass, concrete pathway and BBQ and covered picnic table. The town of Williams is a good place to stop if you are on a road trip heading to/from Denmark or Albany. We recently stopped here on the way back from Denmark and found the quick park stop really helped to burn some energy and break up the journey. Located at Mullaloo Beach foreshore closest to the Mullaloo Beach Hotel and Mullaloo lifesaving club, the Mullaloo Beach Pirate playground is sand based with excellent shade coverage. Vale Adventure Park is Aveley’s newest playground, located on Egerton Drive it is walking distance to the local IGA and cafes, including a favourite of mine Mecca Gourmet. As we arrived my oldest children ran straight to the dual flying fox, they were all smiles racing each other to the end. Glasson park is a fully-gated and fenced playground, with a track around it for kids to safely scoot around in their trikes or scooters. There are plenty of shaded grass areas too. As a mum of a busy 2-year-old toddler, I couldn’t be more thrilled with Joondalup Square playground, located opposite the gigantic Bunnings Warehouse. As an added bonus, the well thought out open-air play area is surrounded by eateries! Joondalup Square playground is shaded by two shade sails and is fully fenced and gated. Escarpment Park is a community playspace for local residents in Alkimos. The park is a large open playspace set in sand, grass and softfall. Suitable for kids 12months+ with some great pieces of play equipment for older kids. A pathway meanders around the park great for scooters and bikes. At our weekly shop on Saturday we were very excited to see that Floreat Forum shopping centre has just opened a new playground in the outdoor area by the cafes/restaurants. Previously there had just been a couple of small things for toddlers to play on but now there is a proper playground complete with shade sails. The brand new $1.4 million Lottery-West funded Whale Playground has opened up at Scarborough Beach. The playground is inspired by Noongar culture and features a blue whale skeleton as its main theme. Set on the sheltered beach at the vibrant Hillarys Boat Harbour is this lovely playground. With a nautical theme including its very own rocking boat, there are steps and ladders, bridges and even a double slide to race down. In the heart of Armadale, you will find Memorial Park. As of September 2018, the City of Armadale has reopened the park with a new train theme, which is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages! Brampton Park in Butler is nestled next to a manmade lake which has lots of ducks and birds and big rocks amongst some shallow parts of the lake for the kids to climb on (you just need to remind them to be careful as some are slippery as our Mister 5 fell in). The Tom Simpson Park has a new playground (opened July 2018) and is a welcome addition to the grassy Mullaloo foreshore! The rusty, tired old metal play structure on the north end of the park has gone and now there’s a fun-tastic wooden structure, as well as a little nature and water play and a toddler area too. Churchill Park is the lovely green park that you’ll find running along the Rockingham Foreshore. There’s a long strip of playgrounds, shaded by mature trees, all found within easy walking distance of each other. OPTUS STADIUM SENSORY PLAYGROUND – Smack in between the Camfield and the new bridge at Stadium park at Optus Stadium you will find a fully fenced sensory playground. This is a very well thought out, fun park! The first things my girls ran towards were the big rope climbing frame and the slide. Karrinyup Shopping Centre is home to Perth’s newest super playground! The Cubby is a 950sqm play space located at the new West Deck which is part of Karrinyup’s impressive $800 million redevelopment. The main feature is a huge multi-level cubby house – at 16-metres long, 5-metres high, and 5-metres wide, it certainly is the biggest cubby I have ever seen!
