Why do we love playgrounds near cafes?
Kids love going wild in at a park. But sometimes parenting is hard or tiring, what with sleepless nights, teething and everything else. Sometimes parents and carers need to exercise self-care. Stopping at a family-friendly coffee shop or restaurant while taking the kids out to a playground can help. Adults can grab a much-needed coffee or bite to eat. Likewise, kids can enjoy a toy corner and very soon cut loose in the park. Everyone wins!

The 5 million dollar foreshore playground features an 8.5 metre tall lighthouse with twisting tunnel slides, a ship play structure, sand play, a rope maze, and basketball court – the kids will never want to go home! Luminous Park is a “super fun” new playground that has everything (minus toilets) and is the third amazing great play space for the lucky residents of the vibrant Iluma Private Estate in Bennett Springs. The huge blue climbing tower is easy for little climbers to navigate and features a giant tunnel slide, a smaller slide, noughts and crosses, and a picnic table at the top. The new Tomato Lake all-abilities playground has opened and it appears to be a big hit as it was very busy when we visited. The playground is in front between the cafe and the bbq picnic area. The bbq area has also been refreshed with new picnic tables. The playground has been designed to suit toddlers through to older kids, including those with disabilities. Located right at the Leederville cafe strip, this fenced and gated playground is sure to be a winner. Faulkner Park is better known as Volcano Park due to the large volcano that is the feature of the park. It is quite a large park with a separate area suited to young ones and toddlers, making it a great day out for the whole family. There is water play, sand play, flying fox and plenty of playground equipment including swings and slides. It is fully fenced and has two entrances which are gated with self-locking gates. Riverton Jetty playground is located next to the Lo Quay River Cafe in Wilson. Riverton Jetty playground is a nature based playground that features 2 slides, 2 swings, a spinning rope frame, a hammock swing and lots of different balance/walking challenges. John Tonkin Reserve is found on the banks of the Swan River in East Fremantle. It’s a lovely spot for a family picnic, with lots of shade from mature trees and picnic shelters. There are BBQs, picnic tables and park benches found in the park. There’s a large boat themed sand fall playground, which is shaded by sails in warmer months. Robinson Reserve, Tuart Hill As of July 2019, Robinson Reserve in Tuart Hill has a new playground. Covered by shade sails, this play area is full of fun for kids from tots to teens. Miss 5 has been excitedly waiting for the new playground to open. So as soon as the fences came down we wandered over for a look. Halliday Park is a quiet park with lots of open green space located behind The Bayswater Hotel. The park is named after an early Bayswater settler, Henry Thomas Halliday, and as of May 2018 the playground area has undergone an upgrade with a new play structure and fresh sand now in place. Neil McDougall Park is a leafy park with a great playground for kids of all ages in the heart of Como. The first thing that grabbed Miss 3’s attention when we arrived here was the flying fox. This has a small platform to climb up and launch from. With a bit of help from me, she had several rides. She loved it! Smiles all around when she hopped off. Coogee Beach Playground – it’s been many years since I visited Coogee Beach. Thankfully not much has changed. The beautiful lush grass strip is still there and is perfect for a game of cricket or dusting off the old frisbee or kicking the ball around. My daughter thought it was her racing track and proceeded to show off her running skills to who ever was interested. The popular Mills Park facility has recently opened a new all-abilities playground near the bbqs and grassed area. This new edition to the existing Mills Park Playspace and Skate Plaza is fully fenced and double gated which is also great for younger children. A good amount of the enclosed playground area is covered by shade sails and there are also a few seating options for parents too. The playground has a mix of play equipment, imaginative play elements and nature play. Hawaiian’s Mezz Playground, Mount Hawthorn Recently Hawaiian’s Mezz in Mount Hawthorn upgraded their children’s playground to a new nature play style setup. This new playground engages children from toddlers to tweens, and is a great place to stop off whilst getting your shopping done. The main part of the playground is a new wooden play structure. Close to the Peninsula Estate area of Maylands, a new playground has been built at De Lacey Reserve. This playground has something for younger and older kids alike. The first thing Miss 4 spotted was the flying fox. This has a small tower to launch from and sand beneath should someone slip off mid-ride. Miss 4 loved it! It was her favourite part of the playground. We found smaller kids will need help bringing it to the tower as it’s hard work without a bit of muscle. On a recent road trip, we took a detour through Northam, the detour was originally to check out the Northam Suspension Bridge, which is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Australia. After crossing the bridge, which was well worth the visit (until the kids thought it was fun to make it sway), we discovered Bernard Park which features two fully fenced play areas, a water playground, sculptures, amphitheatre, picnic and BBQ facilities and public toilets. Delamere Park Playground in Currambine delivers on everything you want to keep kids aged 2yrs onwards entertained and active for hours. The only thing it doesn’t deliver on is shade and this park does sit on a main thoroughfare road. The park has plenty of off-road and on-road parking and has the wonderful benefit of being within spitting distance of a Dome Cafe Restaurant. There’s also a toilet block. If you’re looking for somewhere near the beach for coffee and a play date, Coogee Beach Playground, with its ship themed play structure, could be just the place for you. The structure itself is mainly wooden with a sand pit base and features a wavy slide and rope ladders. There’s a rope bridge, a telescope and portholes to look through as well as an alphabet and numbers game. Based on the height of the playground, I’d say this one is for kids two and over. The Fremantle Esplanade Playground and surrounding space cater for all ages. It is situated on Marine Terrace, opposite the Esplanade Hotel. The playground is surrounded by huge Norfolk Island Pines and green grass making it a great spot for a picnic. Point Walter is a beautiful spot on the south bank of the Swan River perfect for picnics, swimming and playing in the not one but two playgrounds! The first playground is situated right next to The Walters River Cafe – which is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch coffee and cakes. Canning River Regional Park is a large park and wetlands area covering about 6kms located around the Canning River. We usually go to the Kent St Weir area which also has the Canning River Cafe there but recently we discovered another playground a short walk away. This new playground has been designed based on feedback from the community and includes nature and adventure play and plenty of natural shade. Scarborough Beach Skate Park, AKA The Snake Pit, is one of the biggest and most diverse Skate Parks in the country. The Snake Pit is a competition grade skate bowl and is just one of many highlights of the Scarborough Beach skate park. New playground equipment has been installed at Rayment Park in Lathlain. The large open space has been well used and now has three separate play areas, a basketball hoop, open space for running, ball games and a ping pong table. The new junior playground at Rayment Park is fully fenced with entry by a Magna lock style gate and is covered by shade sails. Close to the cafe strip in Mount Lawley, we discovered a lush, green park with a shaded playground, lawn to run on and paths to ride a bike or scooter. The play equipment here includes a traditional playground with various climbing ladders, a fireman pole, a chain bridge for balancing, a twisty slide, monkey bars and a flying fox. Garvey Park is a great local park just at the end of Fauntleroy Avenue on the river’s edge in Ascot. The kids love the playground as it has something to suit both my sensible 5 year old and my adventurous almost 3 year old! The play equipment is all on sand with a large sail shade over most of the equipment which is great in the warmer months. Hillcrest Park in Bayswater now has a new playground nestled on the edge of the oval between the Jamison-Frame Pavilion and the cricket practice cages. The first thing we noted at Hillcrest Park was the base is not sand. A definite plus if you don’t want sandy little feet in your car afterwards! Miss 4 went straight the platform stairs to then explore the top layer of the playground. Beecroft Park is found opposite Empire Village Shopping Centre in City Beach and is popular with local families. The playground is sand fall based and naturally shaded by mature trees, as well as shade sails. The sand is littered with a lot of leaf and sticks, so little ones may prefer to keep their shoes on. Located across from the WA Museum Boola Bardip is the Perth Cultural Centre Playspace, a quirky little play space which has a heavy focus on sensory play. The Playspace is fully fenced and gated and it is open daily from 8am – 7pm.
