Joondalup Resort is a special spot in Perth’s northern suburbs – I’ve celebrated many a friend’s wedding there, as well as my own 30th birthday party. I hadn’t visited for a while, so I was excited to check out the refurbished restaurant. The Alcove Restaurant is that perfect mix of casual, and chic – with that excellent hotel service that is often hard to find. If you have an occasion to celebrate or just would like to treat the family to an excellent meal, be sure to book a table. Currently (July 2025), The Alcove has a brilliant midweek kids-eat-free special.
The Alcove restaurant has a contemporary feel, with lush indoor plants, warm timbers and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lagoon pool.
After we were welcomed and shown to our table, the kids were given colouring in sheets, which doubled as menus. Currently (July 2025), there’s a special midweek “Kids Eat Free” deal on Tuesday to Thursdays. Children aged 12 and under can enjoy a free kid’s meal with each main meal purchased from The Alcove restaurant.
Our friendly waiter asked if we’d like the kid’s food to be served with our entrees or mains, and we opted for sooner rather than later. Miss 8 loved her meatballs in tomato sauce with spaghetti – she said they even rivaled dad’s! (there’s a gf option too).
Miss 12 said the fish and chips were the best she’s eaten, made with good quality fish.
Master 10 enjoyed the cheesy pizza, a good size for a kid’s meal.
Meanwhile the adults (and the teenager), had plenty to choose from on the modern-Australian menu. We started with a grazing platter, that included chargriled sourdough and whipped ricotta with truffle.
I really enjoyed the Fremantle octopus entree; tender charred tentacles and crispy kale with romesco sauce, fennel cream, and sweet pepper drops.
The activity sheets kept the kids well occupied while we tucked into our mains.
Mr H had his steak served perfectly juicy and well rested, to his liking. The Japanese traditional ‘Futari’ full-blood Wagyu beef Denver steak (220g), is well marbled – as they say, “no fat, no flavour”. This steak was stacked with meaty flavours. It’s served with roasted grape tomato, chargrilled broccolini, plus a yuzu and wasabi jus reduction.
I love a fish dish. The Kimberley Barramundi heaped with pearly fish roe (gf), sat atop a crisp fragrant rice cake and surrounded by a creamy Southeast Asian curry sauce, was light and delicious.
What all the kids agreed on was the kids’ dessert (also gf) was the best EVER! Not just a simple bowl of ice cream, the Joondalup Resort kitchen team really know how to spoil the kiddos serving a warm chocolate brownie, with several components including vanilla ice cream, rich chocolate sauce and crispy meringue. Clean plates all round!
The teenager loved the Tiramisu, served covered in a vanilla mascarpone mousse, with a roasted coffee-soaked ladyfinger biscuit and coffee espuma (a thick foam) inside.
Crispy hazelnut and chocolate mousse entremet (multi layered dessert), with spiced caramel, poached pear, and dulce de leche ice cream.
We all really enjoyed our divine diner at Joondalup Resort. It was so lovely to sit around the table, chat, and for the kids to try a few foods that were new to them – the kids liked trying the truffle and Master 10 loved a bite of his dad’s steak. Why not make a night of it, book a hotel stay (interconnecting rooms are available) and make use of that stunning pool!
