Just 44 minutes south-east of Perth in the beautiful Perth Hills, Willow Springs Orchard in Bedfordale offers an unforgettable, hands-on fruit-picking experience for families. We recently visited to pick golden kiwifruit, and it turned into a spontaneous, joy-filled morning for everyone.
The orchard offers seasonal fruit picking, with persimmons and kiwis available for picking around June time. Bookings open just before the weekend (keep an eye on their Facebook page), and picking sessions run for 45 minutes at various times throughout Saturday.
There’s no entry fee—just $6 per kg of fruit picked, and you’re welcome to eat as you go. Buckets and bags are provided, so no need to bring your own. Wear gumboots or rain boots—the orchard floor can be muddy, and there’s lots of fruit on the ground.
Upon arrival, we followed signs to the car park, collected our bucket from the produce shop, and were guided to the orchard by a friendly team member. He gave a quick rundown on how to spot ripe golden kiwis (versus green ones) and which to eat now or store for later. It was informative and simple enough for the kids to understand.
We wandered through the kiwi vines, tasted straight from the tree, filled our bucket, and soaked in the peaceful views. Along the way, the kids were delighted to spot ducks nearby.
Afterwards, we stopped at the on-site play areas and the pop-up cake shop, The Flower Garden Cakery.
I ordered their orange hot chocolate (tasted like orange chocolate in a cup—delicious!) and tried their caramel popcorn almond & malt cookie—absolute heaven.
There’s also a produce shop stocked with local fruit and veg for those who prefer not to pick.
I highly recommend Willow Springs Orchard for families wanting to support local growers, enjoy the outdoors, and share the magic of fruit picking with their kids. We can’t wait to go back for some more fruit picking!
