SUMMARY:Canning Turtle Talk and ‘Turtle Tracker’ Training
DESCRIPTION:Our native snake-necked turtle population needs your help.\n\n\nMany of the City of Canning’s wetlands\, including Wilson Wetlands\, are home to populations of the snake-necked turtle which are under threat from a combination of predators such as foxes and ravens\, vehicle strikes on our roads\, lack of suitable nesting habitat and the increased drying of southwest wetlands. \nCome to this workshop to learn about snake-necked turtles and the Saving Our Snake Necked Turtle (SOSNT) project.  \nSOSNT is a citizen science project and community engagement program to help conserve the snake-necked turtle.   \nSOSNT provides you with an opportunity to help protect turtles by receiving training to become a ‘Turtle Tracker’. You can be trained to support nesting turtles\, protect their nests and use the TurtleSAT App. From September to January turtles leave the water to nest. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create a rag rug from old textiles. \nRag weaving is a wonderful way to take old textiles and give them new life. Come to this workshop to learn how to create your very own rag rug that’s truly unique. \nIf you have old sheets/doona’s to share\, please bring them to the workshop and learn how to repurpose them into a rag rug. \nWe will be using hula hoops for the weaving frame\, so if you have a hula hoop at home\, please bring it along. Or check if your local op shop has hula hoops for sale. We have some to share if you don’t have your own hoop. \nThis workshop is for young people aged 13 to 25 years. \nThis workshop is hosted by the City of Canning in partnership with the Australian Association for Environmental Education WA Chapter. \nThis workshop has been supported by a grant from the Government of Western Australia and the Waste Authority. It responds to Australia’s growing textile waste problem by empowering young people in Canning with practical knowledge and skills to challenge fast fashion and choose sustainable alternatives such as upcycling\, swapping and second‑hand shopping.
