This is a truly unique experience. Set amongst the beautiful landscape of the Porongorups we couldn’t help but fall in love with Thorns Mountain Retreat.
Perfect for a family getaway or parents retreat there are three styles of accommodation to choose from. The Hillside Cottage, Pioneer Cottage or the very unique Camper Van Retreat quite literally set atop the mountain overlooking the glorious home-made cricket ground!
We stayed in the pioneer cottage nestled in amongst the lovely overgrown gardens at the base of the huge property.
It was spacious with plenty of sleeping options and everything we could possibly want or need. It was just cool enough for a fire that kept us toasty well into the night. Everything was clean, fresh and practical.
Breathtaking mountain views from our bathroom
Each accommodation has a binder full of useful tips and maps of leisurely drives, walks or climbs to take both in and around the area and on the property itself.
The owners welcome their guests to share the magic and encourage you to either walk or drive around their land, locating the landmarks and the heartwarming history of the Thorn family and the property itself. We drove around, making pit-stops to explore on foot.
Original fireplace from the cottage built in 1915
View from the car…storm was coming in!
Take the picnic pack provided in your room and enjoy the views
This family run business is wonderfully managed by the charming Thorn men, Peter and his son Michael. Be sure to pop up to the cellar for some wine tasting and a chat. Peter has had a fascinating life and it was lovely sipping on their delightful wines listening to some of his stories and watching Michael “keep him in line” (Peter was convinced I was Nigella Lawson, which I was more than happy to claim!).
Lots of specky snaps with great backdrops …and plenty of spots for romance…OR NOT!
There are dining options available nearby, however, we did get caught out with public holidays and everything seems to shut early, so be sure to do a good shop for essentials either at Albany or Mount Barker before you head off to the Porongorups.
Great for a family getaway and right at the gateway to all the treasures of the Great Southern.
