ALL AGES WELCOME!
The best age to start climbing is a completely individual decision. The Hangout regularly get climbers aged from 3 years old (and sometimes younger), through to those in their 80’s. They have harnesses especially suited to small children, but it is important to realize that everyone is unique and some children (particularly those under 4 or 5), can be apprehensive to either climb or wear a harness. Others take to it with huge enthusiasm and are addicted immediately. You are always welcome to drop by The Hangout anytime for a look around with your child/children so that you can decide if you want to try it. If you decide to give it a go, the staff can help you to get your children climbing straight away.
DO PARENTS NEED TO STAY?
Whether a parent needs to stay with their children depends on the age of their kids. The first time a climber attends The Hangout Indoor Climbing Centre they will need to complete an enrolment form and go through a brief safety induction.
If you are taking teenagers there you will need to either come in and sign their enrolment form (if it is their first visit to The Hangout), or you can print out and sign an enrolment form from The Hangout’s website for them to take in. You can then either stay and relax/read/have a snack etc, or you can leave the teens climbing while you go elsewhere. The staff at The Hangout will teach them how to belay (hold the safety rope), for each other.
If your children are Under 13 years old, then they will need an adult or a teenager to hold the rope for them while they climb. Only one adult/belayer is required for every two or three children. The Hangout will lend you a free rope holder (belaying) harness and show you how this works. (You can also hire additional belay harnesses for just $5 if you choose to have extra rope holders.) Staff there will teach you how to belay in just a few minutes! Their safety equipment is easy to use, and you don’t need to be strong to belay.
WHAT ABOUT FOOD AND DRINK?
The Hangout welcomes you to bring in your own food or drink with you (other than alcohol)! That way you can cater to specific dietary requirements, as well as keeping your children “fueled up” with energy while they exercise without any added expense (*NB: Climbing is “hungry work” as it is easy to exercise for long periods of time without realizing as it is so much fun!) Parents may also like to use their $3 self-serve coffee machine! There are ice-creams, snack foods such as chocolate bars and cold drinks available at The Hangout. If you feel like something more substantial, you may wish to order meals from any pizza or delivery service that you like. The Hangout is located in close proximity to Galleria Shopping Centre in Morley which has lots of food options available too.
OTHER GEAR:
The Hangout can provide climbing shoes and chalk bags for hire (at an additional cost). They also have an extensive climbing equipment pro-shop located onsite, which can also be accessed through their online store:https://shop.thehangout.com.au/
If you wish to GIVE THE GIFT OF CLIMBING you can purchase vouchers either online or in their premises. They are happy to post or email vouchers to you.
