Sculpture by the Sea has returned to Cottesloe Beach for the 15th year, creating a fantastic sculpture path starting from the groyne heading north along the sand and the surrounding grassed areas celebrating the works of 71 artists from 17 countries including Australia.
I like to head up at sunrise and beat the crowds. Some of my favourites this year included April Pine – Shifting Horizon.
Sonia Payes – Women in Bronze
Thoughts of Pinocchio by Bongsoo Kim
And Zombie Crabs by Nicola Rota.
Art is so subjective and personal which is my favourite thing about Sculpture by the Sea. Some pieces have me scratching my head but the person next to me is loving it and vice versa.
There are a few different ways to enjoy the artworks at Sculpture by the Sea, you can wander around the pieces or jump in on a guided tour.
Every weekend between 10am – 3pm there will be free artists talks. There will a few sessions each Saturday & Sunday to run for about 10-20 minutes. Look out for the red bean bags and feather banners installed at various locations on the day. The talks also include an AUSLAN Interpreter. More information on which artist will be presenting can be found at sculpturebythesea.com/cottesloe/artist-talks/
TACTILE TOURS
Tactile Tours are designed to introduce visitors with a disability to new ways of experiencing and enjoying contemporary sculpture through informed discussion and touch. The works selected for each tour have been nominated by both the Artists and the Sculpture by the Sea Site Manager as being safe to touch. The sculptures are located in accessible areas.
Verbal descriptions of sculptures visited during the tours are offered to participants who are blind or vision-impaired. A Tactile Tour lasts approximately one hour. Bookings are essential. Please contact Jacqueline@dadaa.org.au for information and a booking request form. Tel: (08) 9430 6616
A beach wheelchair and a manual wheelchair will be available for visitors with disabilities to use during their visit – at the exhibition site office. Contact: 02 8399 0233 for information and to make a booking.
On Wednesday 13th & Thursday 14th March special matting will be installed which will enable visitors with limited mobility and those using wheelchairs to access and experience sculpture located in specific areas on the beach. Visitor service staff will be available to assist and inform visitors on these days from 10.00am- 7.00pm. Shaded areas on the beach will be provided and additional first aid support will be on site nearby.
