Prickly Pear Cafe, Yokine
Prickly Pear Cafe is a new vegetarian cafe located in Yokine. It features affordable meals and treats, and is adjacent to a great new kids playground.
This cafe offers vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and kosher options. Food is made fresh on-site daily. Meal options include vegetarian falafel with fresh veggies, sushi, shawarma, homemade muffins and more.
We stopped for a visit after school recently and found Prickly Pear Cafe to be a popular spot with local families. Lots of families from local schools dropped by for a play or a coffee whilst we were there.
We’ve visited twice, and both times it was unfortunately too late to grab some hot food that day (my bad!). So on our last I grabbed a takeaway latte and Miss 5 opted for a hot chocolate. Miss was tempted by one of the beautiful muffins, but then changed her mind. The latte came hot and a strong blend. Our visit was on a windy day, and this really warmed me up. The hot chocolate was chocolatey and very good. A warm treat for a cool day.
Just inside the door of the cafe, there is a bookshelf with chalk and colouring materials for kids. Children are welcome to create artwork with the chalk in the concrete paths outside. The shelf also operates as a little library. For a gold coin donation, you can drop off a book and borrow a new one.
While I didn’t manage to get a photo of the inside of the cafe, the atmosphere is warm and cozy. The cafe is small inside with a few wooden tables with chairs and handcrafted artwork on the wall. We also found a couple of highchairs available here.
More tables and chairs are assembled under the large verandah outside. There’s plenty of space to park a pram, and it’s a handy spot to be able to sit and watch your children as they play.
The Harry Gunzberg Playground, adjacent to the cafe, is part of the Maccabean Oval. This includes a great climbing frame kids from preschool to older primary age will enjoy. The play structure includes two different types of monkey bars and a balancing beam. Two different ladders lead up to a higher level.
From the top level, there is a slide and a fireman pole down into the sandpit base. There is also a steering wheel and a telescope for imaginative play.
Close to the door of the cafe is a toddler swing and a regular swing. Adjacent to this in the sand is a spring rocker built for two. Perfect for younger children.
A beautiful mural of a bird grabs the eye. It spreads the length of the cafe wall, and ties the fun of the play area to the cafe.
Two things I love as a parent about this playground is there are shade sails and there is lots of seating. Wooden benches are located at either end of the playground.
Beyond the playground, there is a huge oval. Plenty of space to run around with the kids or the family dog.
Overall this is a great family-friendly vegetarian cafe. A fabulous spot to meet up with friends or grandparents. Lots of parking is available in front of the playground, including a number of disabled spots.
