If you’re enjoying a Margaret River vay-cay with your family (or even as a couple!) and looking for a simple, yet VERY delicious lunch away from the usual vineyards and fancy restaurants on Caves Road, make sure to check out Pies & Ale. Nestled a bit further south of town, not far from Witchcliffe, this cosy eatery is hidden in the forest. Originally starting at Subiaco Farmers Market, the owners decided to settle in this beautiful region. Pies & Ale has already grown a cult-like following. Each day, they hand-press these yummy pies, and the fillings change regularly.
We’d been to Hamelin Bay for the morning, and dropped into Pies and Ale for lunch on the way back to Margs.
We were all given a warm welcome by the staff, as well as beautiful Benny their dog.
The kids were all given colouring/ Aussie word search sheets, which kept them all busy.
The simple menu offers up house-made pies and local beer – Mr H was in actual heaven! All of their savory fillings are wrapped in flaky, house-made pastry and served piping hot with gravy on the side.
Enhance your pie-eating experience with sides like mushy peas, mashed potatoes, pickles, peppers, onion rings, and local pork chipolatas. I’m gluten intolerant, so apart from feeling very sad I couldn’t try these tasty pies for myself, there were plenty of GF sides I could put together to make myself a meal.
If the kids don’t want a pie – there a couple of other options.
Miss 10 was stoked with her chicken and potato gems.
There are high chairs and toilets on site. There’s also a small playground for kids to play and explore.
It was a bit hot the day we visited (in January), but this is sure to be a hit on non-heatwave days!
Pies & Ale is very popular, and they often sell out, so it’s best to visit early to avoid missing out.
