SUMMARY:Christine de Grancy's 'A Day with David' | Joondalup Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:A rare\, intimate encounter captured between a music icon and artists in a psychiatric clinic — shown for the first time in WA. \nWhat happens when one of the world’s most iconic artists steps away from the spotlight to spend a quiet day with outsider artists in a psychiatric clinic? Photographer Christine de Grancy was there to capture it\, and now\, for the first time in Western Australia\, we’re bringing these extraordinary images to Joondalup.  \n  \nOn 8 September 1994\, David Bowie\, accompanied by Brian Eno\, André Heller and photographer Christine de Grancy\, entered the grounds of the Gugging Psychiatric Clinic near Vienna. This wasn’t a casual photo opportunity. Bowie’s own family history included his half-brother Terry Burns\, whose schizophrenia and tragic suicide haunted Bowie’s life and work. At Gugging\, he encountered something profound: a community of Art Brut creators\, patients who had become internationally recognised artists\, including Oswald Tschirtner\, Johann Hauser\, Johann Garber and August Walla.  \n  \nDeGrancy captured four rolls of film that day\, revealing Bowie absorbed\, humble and intent on listening\, sketching\, sharing coffee and engaging with artists’ stories. This rare\, intimate perspective coincided with Bowie’s creative reconnection with Brian Eno\, inspiring the iconic 1. Outside album (1995).   \n  \nThirty years later\, these photographs stand as both cultural history and intimate artistic encounter\, a rare glimpse into Bowie’s search for meaning\, authenticity and connection beyond the stage.  \n  \nPresented in collaboration with Santa Monica Art Museum\, this exhibition transforms the gallery into a reflective space on creativity\, mental health and the power of art to connect worlds. The obvious benefits of meeting in a safe friendly supportive positive and encouraging space to create art\, led to the program becoming ongoing and a new focus of Richmind’s recovery approach and brand.\n \nThis exhibition celebrates the numerous and profound benefits art can have on our mental health and the amazing diversity of ways people can express themselves creatively to support their wellbeing. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Richmind and other artists\, to promote the benefits of art for all our mental health. \nCreating Meaning \n✰ Opening Event ✰\nSunday\, 4 January\n2:00pm to 4.00pm \nAn exhibition by Richmind and other artists\, to promote the benefits of art for all our mental health and raise funds for Richmind WA’s Mental Health Services Art Therapy Program\, “HeART & Soul”.\n \nCurated by Richmind’s Principal Artist in Residence and “Creative Therapies Coordinator David Giles \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nThe HeART & Soul art project began as a simple distraction activity created to support people through the Christmas period\, a sometimes difficult and isolating time of year. The obvious benefits of meeting in a safe friendly supportive positive and encouraging space to create art\, led to the program becoming ongoing and a new focus of Richmind’s recovery approach and brand.\n \nThis exhibition celebrates the numerous and profound benefits art can have on our mental health and the amazing diversity of ways people can express themselves creatively to support their wellbeing. The brief for the artists was “What brings meaning to my life?”\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \n40% of all sales donated to Richmind \nArt demos by David Giles at 11.00am on\n– Wednesday\, 7 January \n– Thursday\, 8 January \n– Friday\, 9 January \n– Wednesday\, 14 January \n– Thursday\, 15 January \n– Friday\, 16 January \n \nPainting as Therapy Workshops with David Giles\nSunday\, 4 January and Sunday\, 11 January  \n
