The City of Canning Youth Services Team is inviting members of Canning’s diverse cultural community to join us for a consultation day and contribute to the co-design of the Youth Communication Toolkit!

The Youth Communication Toolkit is an important piece of the Youth Engagement Framework – a City of Canning initiative to assist young people (11-25) to be better engaged in civic life in the Canning community. The purpose of the Youth Communication Toolkit is to identify the best ways to communicate local government and civic information to young people, and provide experience-informed guidance to the wider City administration on appropriate and effective communication strategies when engaging young people into the future.

The City of Canning would like to hear from young people to better understand the where, how, and what of communication. This understanding will help us to ensure young people have better access to opportunities, more input into City decision making, and have an equal opportunity to shape the world around them.

In collaboration with the Canning Cultural Ambassadors, this consultation will focus on consulting young people and families of the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) community of the City. The event will include:

• A presentation on the purpose and objectives of the Youth Communication Toolkit from the City of Canning Youth Services Team
• An open forum facilitated by the Youth Services Team to discuss the different elements and dynamics of communication in CaLD communities with opportunities for the community to contribute perspectives and ideas
• Opportunities for young people and families to fill out an online survey from which the data will be used in the development of the Youth Communication Toolkit
• Lunch provided by the City of Canning
• Music and entertainment

This event is open to all members of the community, however this event is focused on young people (11 – 25 years). Young people within this age bracket are strongly encouraged to attend however all ages are welcome. A wide range of food options will be available to cater to diverse dietary requirements. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please indicate this on the registration form filled when reserving a ticket.

Duty of Care: The City of Canning is committed to providing safe and supported environments where young people can feel welcome and thrive. Our qualified youth team will take reasonable steps to ensure young people are safe, supported and supervised during their time on our programs and in our centres. A large part of our Youth Service is delivering drop-in from youth centres and outreach activities at various locations; meaning young people can come and go as they please during opening times. Please note: if a young person chooses to leave in the middle of a program or centre open hours, they have the right to do so. City of Canning does not take responsibility for young people who leave the centre or are not in the premises. City of Canning youth staff do not have the authority to keep young people at our premises at the request of parents.
