Spirit of Budō: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts

Friday, 1 June to Saturday, 23 June
Gallery Central, 12 Aberdeen Street, Perth

Free Exhibition | 1-23 June 2018
Weekdays: 10am – 4:45pm
Saturdays: 12pm – 4pm

‘The Spirit of Budo: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts’ is an exhibition which explores the history of ‘budo’ through to its modern variations.

Presented by The Japan Foundation, this internationally touring exhibition features a collection of classical budo weapons, spanning sword mountings and bows with designs dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, full samurai armour, and elaborate helmets. To introduce modern budo, the exhibition showcases protective gear and implements from nine disciplines.

‘Budo’ (lit., martial ways), also known as Japanese material arts, originated from medieval combat techniques (bujitsu) used in warfare. Over centuries, these practices evolved from survival combat to physical exercises emphasising self-discipline and spiritual development.

The various budo practices that were systemised and formed during the Meiji period (1868-1912) as became known as modern budo, such as the internationally recognised judo, kendo and karate. All forms of martial arts created prior to this period are categorised as classical budo.

‘The Spirit of Budo’ invites audiences to learn the history of these rich cultural traditions and their legacy today.

Meet The Masters Art Workshop: Leonardo Da Vinci (Ages 6-10)

Thursday, 21 June, 10am to 11.30am
Art On The Move, 21 Beach Road, Fremantle

Presented by The Children’s Museum of Western Australia, Meet the Masters will introduce your children to the backgrounds, focus and techniques of some of the most famous artists that ever lived – including some that still do! Each workshop is based on one artist and is split into three parts – Inspire, Educate and Create.

INSPIRE: Using books, posters and multimedia we explore the fascinating lives and famous (and not so famous) works of the Master artists, what they loved and why.
EDUCATE: The next step is experimenting with various techniques and media used by the artist.
CREATE: This is where we not only recreate techniques just learnt, but add our own flair to improve the works of the masters and take it a step further!

Meet the Masters connects children to the artist and their motivations, introducing new techniques and ways of looking at things.
Our mini masters will increase their art vocabulary and practice the elements of art while having a ball.
Not only is art fun, but it helps kids learn and grow in so many different ways… they learn about culture, geography and how art relates to other subjects, increases confidence, expands visual learning, teaches collaboration and accountability and of course allows them to express themselves in more creative ways.
